There seems to be a strong body of opinion (based on research) amongst psychologists that in the more egalitarian countries eg the Scandinavian countries fewer women choose to study STEM subjects in higher education and follow related careers. Concluding that the freer the society the less interested women are in the likes of engineering and technology. Therefore, are we trying to encourage girls/young women into a career they might not find as rewarding and fulfilling as we claim, to pursue a broader and more political agenda? In the 40+ years I have been a member of the ICE they have endeavoured to balance the genders in the profession with little success. After all the author of this editorial appears to have given-up hands-on engineering after just 2.5 years from graduating to pursue a journalistic career of almost 21 years. So how should we be communicating to women about careers in engineering? Just a thought.
